Donuts

The modern word "donut" (as in "Dunkin Donuts") is a simplification of the more traditional "doughnut" (as in "Krispy Kreme Doughnuts"), which evolved from the archaic "dough knot." No one knows which baker originally twisted bread into a knot and fried it, but the legions of pastry thus spawned have sated many a weary constable.
