Super Nasty Birch Log

October 10, 2005 @ 12:29 pm

My new apartment has a fireplace, and seeing as I'm now living in New England and all I thought it would be nice to have some birch logs in there. So I'm driving through the woods and what do I see but a fallen birch tree by the side of the road. It has conveniently split itself into managable lengths, so I throw one in my trunk and later put them in my fireplace.

About a month had gone by when I noticed a bright yellow powder on the top log. I thought it was something falling down the chimney, but after a few days it seemed to be growing. So I turned the log over and...

Moldy Birch Log

Nasty! All these different kinds of mold had taken over and actually split the log wide open.

You can even see where the mold was pushing sections of the wood out of the core of the log.

Can you believe this was living in my apartment? And not even in the back of the fridge where something like this belongs. Needless to say, I did some thorough cleaning after I got rid of those logs.

I'm glad you opted out of burning them. (so smart)

have you visited your neighbor bill cosby? i drove by his house out there once and there are all these very unfriendly 'no tresspassing' and 'KEEP OUT' signs. do you feel this song by james taylor describes your life? i do. Now the first of December was covered with snow And so was the turnpike from Stockbridge to Boston Lord, the Berkshires seemed dreamlike on account of that frosting With ten miles behind me and ten thousand more to go

Vaporized mold is not what I had in mind. Mother Nature kicks Martha Stuart's butt.

I didn't even know Bill Cosby lived around here. But I shouldn't be surprised. Williams owns an estate called Mount Hope that used to belong to one of the Rockefeller daughters, complete with mansion, stables, etc. They had their new staff welcome function out there, and apparently the neighbors include George Steinbrenner among others. I haven't seen the Berkshires frosted yet, but it's coming soon. I caught a whiff of leaves and smoke and chill in the air that reminded me of Halloweens as a kid in Boston, a season that never quite arrived in St. Louis. No one does Autumn like New England. I'm going to look up that James Taylor song and listen to it, more later...
