Dancing At The Elks Lodge

April 2, 2006 @ 4:13 pm

Good news! I have found the epicenter of camp, around which point all camp space-time is bent. It's the North Adams Elks Lodge, where I attended an awesome dance last night. On each of the four walls of the dance hall, an elk head with lights on its antlers presides over one of the Elk tenets in neon: Charity, Justice, Fidelity, and Brotherly Love.

Justice Brotherly Love

The drinks were super cheap ($2.50 for Guinness!) and the bartender was also the president of the Lodge. It seemed like every 20-something in the Berkshires was there, but it gets better.

There was a dance contest at midnight, and it came down to two soloists - Nato, a curator from Mass MoCA, and Joan, a sixty year old lady in a red dress and gold shoes. Nato had some amazing moves but Joan was the sentimental favorite. When the judges couldn't decide, the crowd began chanting "dance off!" Nato tried to do some flips with a folding chair but fizzled, while Joan stuck with the arm waving that had so endeared her with the crowd, and handily won. Words are not sufficient to describe the absurdity of watching this transpire under the benevolent gaze of four elk heads that had been wired for lighting, although Jimbo's article comes close. It was an amazing evening.

Clearly, I must come and visit solely to dance under the watchful gaze of the elks.

Maybe I should have said "campiness." It was pretty campy.
