Disco Fries at the Big Steer

July 25, 2005 @ 6:34 pm

Last night, while watching Venture Brothers, I noticed that Hank ordered "Disco Fries, whatever those are," at a diner. The comment was totally random and leads me to conclude that one of their writers is probably a Carleton Alum.

I couldn't find a picture of the Big Steer, if anyone has one please send it to me!For those of you who don't know, Disco Fries were the specialty of the Big Steer Truck Stop off Interstate 35 at Carleton's exit. It was the only place within 20 miles that was open 24 hours a day, so we spent a lot of late nights drinking their awful coffee. The decor was outrageously outdated, with olive green booths and dark wood panelling. They tore it down a few years ago and put up a shiny new Travel Center, keeping only the big steer statue on a pole as a reminder of its former glory.

Anyway, Disco Fries were just potatoes sliced the short way (to make discs) and fried. You expected a fog machine and flashing lights and all you got was a variation on home fries, but it gave the place some nice local color. If there is anyone else out there who remembers Disco Fries, please post!

My mom used to make those. We just called them chips but I guess I'll have to tell her those were Disco fries.

Cool! They have to be thick cut to qualify as Disco Fries, otherwise they'd just be chips. Unless you're English, in which case they would be Disco Chips.
