Faux Theremin Plans
May 10, 2005 @ 3:03 pm
I have begun work on my faux (photo) theremin using an old CD player and some Object Oriented Programming principles. I'm maintaining the CD player interface, but changing the guts to produce Theremin noise.
The faux theremin will take in light through the old display panel, and produce a sound wave which will exit through the original speaker jack.
If everything works as planned, I'll be able to wave my hand over the CD player and produce "music." Radio Shack shipped my parts today, so I will post more here soon.

faux theremin, huh? intriguing... I love me some off-the-beaten-path instruments, like the ones used by one of the odder bands I used to go see in Brooklyn, One Ring Zero. Anything can be an instrument! Even Kitty Litter!

A real theremin would produce a true theremin sound based on a smooth wave sound, rather than the clicky-sounding square wave produced by a photo theremin. But on the other hand, they aren't so portable and are vastly more complex to build. Once I get a little more practice reading circuit diagrams we can attempt it.
