My Theremin Is Complete!

Philips Faux Theremin

It used to be a Philips CD player, but now it is a photo theremin! Way better. If you wave your hand over it, it sounds kind of like an angry mosquito. Attached to an external amplifier, it sounds more like an angry fire engine.

Working on the theremin
Here I am connecting the audio output to the existing jack, using my iPod and an old set of headphones for the sample audio source.

Cannibalized circuit board
I used the existing circuit board as a frame for all the components I was re-using, including the battery case, on/off switch, and audio output. First I filed off the connections to the old junk, then soldered new wires on.

Theremin Circuit Board
Here you can see the new circuit board sitting on the old one, with two photo cells pointing at the window where the cd display used to be.

Congratulations! ... I still don't quite understand what the use of this is, but congrats! I like the picture of you bent over the tray - the angle of the shot and the fact that you're surrounded by circuitry makes you look like a big nerd. :)
