Fighting Fire With Water

I had an interview with the Williamstown Fire Chief today and it looks like I'll be joining the volunteer fire department here! How cool is that? The altruist in me gets to serve the community, while the ten year old boy in me gets to ride on the fire truck.

There will be some training, but I don't know how intense it will be. As a rookie I'll probably spend a lot of time doing the less glamorous stuff, for a while anyway. But the training should be fun. Apparently they send you through a smoke-filled maze to get acquainted with your breathing equipment. Glenda, what on earth would make you think I'm trying to meet women? ;)

You're going to be a fireman? That is...that is...man, that's cool. I don't even have words. I answered a reference question tonight for a fireman, that's all I got.

i got my bachelor's degree in journalism. the thing they taught us that i remember above all else is to love firefighters. the police are not a journalist's friends. firefighters are our best buddies. i get a sort of childlike enthusiasm when i am near firefighters. the other day i was in line behind several firefighters at starbucks--even a lady firefighter! i felt giddy.

My cousin Shannon was the first female firefighter in Appleton WI. My other cousin Mike (same uncle but from a different marriage*) is a volunteer firefighter in my home town of Rudolph. He was originally going to go into the Marines, but he was only doing it for the money. He is 18, or maybe 19 now, I forget. Thats all I actually know about him, though his connection to the fire department lets my uncle in on a lot of town gossip, which he tells to my parents, which they tell to me, sometimes. *Why must I include this information? Answer: I'm lame, sorry
