Paris Is Still There

September 26, 2005 @ 8:14 pm

I'm happy to report that I've just returned from Paris and it's as enchanting as I was led to believe by such films as Breathless, Amelie, and Casablanca. The pretext for the trip was my father's participation in a French bookbinding competition. I'll post about his entry later, but you can see examples of his work from previous years.

Art Nouveau Metropolitain Sign
Isn't the Art Nouveau gorgeous? I think I finally get the difference between Art Nouveau and Art Deco, thanks to this Metro stop.

Siblings by the Seine in Paris
My sister and me by the Seine, waiting for a water taxi to whisk us to the Eiffel Tower.

A view of the Arc de Triomphe from the Eiffel Tower. Paris came out looking a bit like a diorama in this shot.

The Baker Family Rowing Around Versailles
Did you know you can rent row boats at Versailles?

Rowing Around Versailles Old School
The detail is from a painting in the palace. After seeing this I didn't feel so bad about making my sister row us around. In the words of Sledge Hammer, "Call me a feminist." (Just for the record, we divided the rowing evenly between us. I can't make my sister do anything.)

Paris Street Performer Riding A Tiny Bicycle
And of course, what would Paris be without a little street life?

What no robot street mimes? I'm very disappointed... and jealous.

Paris looks so very white (as in the buildings). It looks exactly like the drawing of it hanging on the wall at my aunt's house

Do water taxi's actually go fast enough to "whisk" people around? Maybe it's a Western-Eastern hemisphere thing.

did your sister previously own that williams sweatshirt or was that a brotherly gift worn out of sisterly love?

The person rowing the boat looks like a dude to me. But... hard to tell. W00t Fr@nc3! When a finger points at the sky, it's a fool who looks at the finger. When a dude is riding around on a tiny bicycle... um...

She picked up that sweatshirt when she came to visit me last month. My parents were delivering some furniture so she flew up from DC and we made a weekend of it. Now she owns more Williams gear than I do! I think you're right srah, it might be a dude. If not, the dude in a boat with three ladies is a pimp, especially in that hat and coat.
