Christmas Chimp
December 25, 2006 @ 10:37 pm
This is a photo from Christmas of 1990. It represents, in the words of Alan Ginsberg, a break in the normal modality of my consciousness.
I was at Pere Marquette State Park for some sightseeing, and for five bucks they put a hat on your head and a chimp in your lap and took a picture. The chimp grabbed my hand and looked up at me, and I realized that it had my fingers and that I had its ears. This was disturbing, to put it mildly, and ever since then monkeys have kind of freaked me out. They threaten my humanity.
It's funny, I hadn't seen this picture since it was taken, and in my memory the chimp was wearing the hat and I was better looking. I guess there's still a chimp in a hat, just not the one I thought.
