Groundhog Had Babies
May 31, 2004 @ 2:19 am
I thought the groundhog living in my backyard was really fat (see previous posts) but it turns out she was pregnant! Here are some pictures of Larry, Moe, and Curly, as I named the little squeakers. One of them actually hissed at me when I went out on the porch!
They're about 8 inches long, look at the leaves for scale.

He's arching his back as if to say, "stay the hell away from my rock!"

As long as they stay out of the trash, I don't mind. They're cute but not very friendly.

We have 4 little babies in our back yard. Very friendly, my son was petting 2 of them and feeding all of them.

Hi! I have notice that a groundhog has moved into my backyard. It is currently living under my deck. I would like to get ride of it because i have outdoor cats and they almost got in a fight with the groundhog yesterday. How do i know if its a nesting mother? Im really worried it might be and there are babies under the deck. it doesnt look fat but ive never seen a skinny or fat groundhog. any advice is appreciated! Alissa

Beats me, I didn't know mine was pregnant until the little squeakers showed up.

I thought I had gotten rid of three very large groundhogs over the past two weeks,using(Have-a-heart trap)and releasing them in a very nice environment. They had started to eat all the new Spring flowers and vegetables that we had just set out. I covered the den holes with the gravel and dirt left from the digging. When checking the area a few days ago,I found a much smaller opening dug out and a little larger new opening. Thinking it was an animal trying to re-dig the burrow I covered it again and in a few hours the holes re-appeared.I left them open and in a little while,up popped the cutest little hogs,(8) in number, all fur covered and wide open eyes. They have been exploring the back yard which is bordered by woods and a brook. I got some broccolli, baby carrots, lettuce and yes, they are eating peanuts and sunflower seeds. They have voracious appetites and are eating almost all day long. They do den up in early afternoon and don't re-appear until morning.I am concerned for them as there are a few cats in the area and am wondering if I should take them,to the area that I released the adults in.

The babies are precious. I suspect that we have babies under our shed as Mom pops out every so often and feasts in our yard. We noticed that her belly shrunk significantly. We hope to see some babies soon. After reading these other emails, I must relay that I spoke to a wildlife rehabilitater recently inquiring about a safe way to protect my plants that she had been eating. I wanted it to be a humane way of course. She had told me that trapping them and relocating them is cruel as the groundhogs have to compete with wildlife already existing which is highly stressful not to mention the stress of the whole experience together. Also, if it is a nesting mom, her babies will be left behind. Just food for thought. There are safe and natural ways to protect your plants I found out-fox urine of all things- they sell products of such. Other than eating plants, they are such cute and enjoyable little critters. It is a good experience for children to see wildlife and watch the miracle of new life.
