Say It Ain't So, Yul

Yul Brynner in West WorldHere's a bit of movie trivia for you: In what movie does Yul Brynner play a robotic cowboy who is programmed for pleasure but goes haywire and starts killing people? It could only be Westworld.

I just finished watching this movie and I want that hour and 28 minutes back. I could have saved myself an hour and 26 minutes by watching the preview, which shows the best parts of the entire movie with better pacing and more dramatic impact than the movie itself.

The comically outdated computers in the control center are one of the film's few redeeming features. There are no fewer than five shots of giant computers running simple geometric screen savers. Five triangles moving around a black and white screen? The future is now!

I had that same experience when I watch The Constant Gardener yesterday. (Except that Yul Brenner was replaced by Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weis, and robotic anythings were replaced by Africa, drug testing corporations, England, and some other stuff, namely a completely different plot.) Still, a fruitless use of my time.
