Damn Post Office
March 14, 2006 @ 7:19 pm
So I sent my mom a birthday card last week, and look what I got in the mail today:
I am of two minds about this.
1: This is perfectly reasonable.
The post office is able to keep first-class postage at a reasonable level through the increasing use of automation. By charging extra for letters that don't fit easily into the system they keep postage rates in check and deliver the rest of the mail faster.
2: This is bullshit.
This is a six inch square letter with a first class stamp, and they say they need an extra 15 cents? This is not my idea of civil service. Mail the damn letter!
I am not usually such a crank, but I'm going down to the post office tomorrow for an explanation. And to buy a 15 cent stamp. Sorry mom, it looks like your birthday card will be a little late this year.

Hey Nick... you know there might of been a chance of it going through the first time if you had put the current 1st class postage rate of $0.39 on it. It's possible that they only noticed it being too large after it got bumped for not enough postage, although according to this domestic postage rate chart the non-machine surcharge is only for items with a height greater than 6 1/8 inches so if it's only 6 inches tall then it shouldn't have a surcharge. :)
